01 February 1820 - Repay Our Debts

We had to pay the price of all the loans. No matter how much we avoid it, it'll soon come back. So we decided to face it, head-to-head. We would not run away.

We dismissed our servant and changed our lodgings. We decided to rent a garret under the roof. I had to do odious houseworks. I had to wash the dishes, the soiled linen, the shirts, the dishclothers. It was hard work, I felt like I didn't deserve it. But what could I do? It was to make up for something that I had done wrong.

But, thanks to this I've learnt something. I realised the horrible existence of the needy. Now I would go to the grocer, fruiterer and butcher, holding a basket on my arm and bargaining, defending every sou of my money.
